Armstrong Says His X Posts and Avatars Are Not Token Endorsements

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong told followers not to treat his personal X account as investment advice, saying his posts and profile pictures are not endorsements of any token or project.
“Please don’t follow my personal X account for investment advice or signals around individual coins,” Armstrong wrote on X on Monday. “I’m simply posting things I find interesting or funny on the internet. I may not even be aware if there is a coin or project attached to the content I’m posting.” He added that his “posts and profile pics are also not endorsements or commitments to anything.”
Armstrong framed the statement as a response to “the recent buzz around my profile picture changes and some feelings that the Base community isn’t being supported enough,” acknowledging the feedback was “tough to hear.” Base is Coinbase’s Layer 2 network.
He told traders that treating his account as a source of edge carries their own risk. “If you’re treating my X account as alpha, you are doing so at your own risk, against my wishes. I would never recommend this,” he wrote.
On the question of Coinbase and Base team support for tokens, Armstrong said the company would not promote specific coins. “There are many tokens we would like to list on our centralized exchange, but can’t for compliance and regulatory reasons,” he wrote. “If you want Jesse or me to pump your bags or shill certain coins, we’re also not going to do that,” referring to Base creator Jesse Pollak.
Armstrong listed what Coinbase does provide: in-person Base Batches and grants for builders, investment from Coinbase Ventures and the Base Ecosystem Fund, and periodic integration of Base DeFi protocols into Coinbase products. He said the company biases “toward supporting projects that we believe will create long term customer value.”
The clarification follows a pattern in which Armstrong’s avatar changes have moved markets. In a prior episode, a token tied to his profile picture crashed after he swapped his avatar for a CryptoPunk.
Armstrong closed by saying the choice of how to interpret his account rests with followers: “You may like this approach or you may not, but either way hopefully it creates clarity going forward.” He added a postscript: “I still might post memes if I think they are funny! It’s still not investment advice.”
