Former users of the defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX are reporting the receipt of funds as part of a $900 million distribution round, marking the fifth such payout since the platform’s collapse in 2022.
Recovery Gains Momentum
Former FTX user Sunil Kavuri shared on X that he received funds distributed from the FTX Recovery Trust through the crypto exchange Kraken. Kavuri noted that he was notified last week that FTX had sent the funds to Kraken, which released them on schedule on Friday, in line with the distribution plan for exchanges including BitGo and Payoneer.
Significant Milestone
This latest distribution brings the total amount paid out to affected users to approximately $11 billion. The collapse of FTX in 2022 was one of the most significant events in the cryptocurrency market, leading to criminal charges against several executives, including former CEO Sam ‘SBF’ Bankman-Fried, who remains in federal prison.
Legal and Regulatory Challenges
The FTX trust faced a setback last week when a bankruptcy court judge ruled that the trust could not pursue damages against Binance and its former CEO Changpeng Zhao. However, the judge did not dismiss the trust’s claim to claw back $1.76 billion from Binance, alleging that the funds were due in part to Bankman-Fried’s malfeasance.
Looking Ahead
The ongoing recovery process for FTX creditors is a crucial step in rebuilding trust in the cryptocurrency market. As more funds are distributed, it sends a positive signal to the broader financial community that even in the wake of significant failures, efforts are being made to protect and reimburse investors.
