August Payrolls Knock Bitcoin Off $81,000
Markets
Bitcoin broke a range it had held through the Asian and European sessions when the August employment report landed at 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday, and has spent the U.S. session clawing back part of the drop. Every large token except the privacy coins is lower.
The print reopened a rate decision that Fed governor Christopher Waller appeared to close a day earlier. Waller told a Reuters interview on Thursday that he was inclined to hold, and said he expected the August employment data to stay in line with recent trends. It did not. The Federal Open Market Committee meets Sept. 15-16 with a fresh dot plot attached, and August inflation lands four days before that.
Bitcoin last changed hands at $79,810, down 2.1% over 24 hours and up 2.2% over seven days, after trading between $78,706 and $82,108, CoinGecko data shows. Ether was at $2,457, down 2.2% on the day and up 0.3% on the week. XRP fell 4.5% to $1.40, Solana 3.3% to $101.92 and BNB 0.4% to $721.19. Total crypto market value stood at $2.70 trillion on $107 billion of volume, with bitcoin dominance at 59.2%.
Five Minutes, $1,430
Bitcoin traded at $81,315 at 8:30 a.m. ET and $79,885 at 8:35, a 1.8% drop across a single five-minute candle, according to CoinGecko. It had spent the previous 12 hours between $80,619 and $81,381. The low of $78,706 came at 10:50 a.m., more than two hours after the release.
The recovery since has been slow and one-directional. Bitcoin has regained about 40% of the $2,609 peak-to-trough move and sits 1.8% below where it traded before the release.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm payrolls rose 162,000 in August against a 31,000 monthly average over the prior 12 months. June was revised up 11,000 to 31,000 and July from a 23,000 decline to a 21,000 gain, adding 55,000 jobs across the two months. Unemployment held at 4.1% and participation edged up to 61.6%.
Martin Lee, Market Insights Lead at DWF Labs, wrote in commentary circulated to reporters after the release: “A hot print strengthens Warsh’s take on the economy and grows hike fears. We likely see markets dip and bonds drop as yields rise. $78K is the max pain price for the 18 Sept expiry.”
Bonds stayed put. The 10-year Treasury yield sat at 4.78% and the 30-year at 5.25% in the afternoon, both within three basis points of Thursday’s closes. Gold gained 1% to $4,476 an ounce and the dollar index fell 0.3% to 99.15. The S&P 500 was flat at 7,715 and the Nasdaq Composite up 0.4% at 26,495. Crypto repriced the jobs report harder than the markets that trade the rate directly.
Waller’s Conditional Hold
Waller spoke at a Reuters NEXT Newsmaker interview in Washington on Thursday, and hedged with a conditional the market read as a hold.
“If this continues in the data due over the next two weeks, I would be inclined to support holding the target,” he said. He also said that “if the incoming data for August show this improvement has been fleeting, then it may be appropriate to raise the policy rate,” and that his decision “will be heavily influenced by what we learn about August inflation.” August CPI publishes Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m., according to the BLS schedule.
Prediction markets did not wait for it. The Polymarket contract on a quarter-point September increase traded at 39.5 cents at 8:30 a.m. ET and 53.5 cents at 8:45, and has held a narrow lead since, at 50.5 cents against 49.5 cents for no change. A quarter-point cut trades below half a cent, on $95 million of volume across the event.
Fabian Dori, Chief Investment Officer at Sygnum Bank, said in emailed comments: “A clear rebound doesn’t settle the debate, it arms the hawks. After Jackson Hole, a strong print validates current September hike probabilities. But Treasury cash balances, bank balance-sheet capacity, private credit creation and stablecoin supply matter independently of short-term Fed decisions.”
The committee held the target range at 3.5% to 3.75% on July 29 over dissents from Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie Logan, all three of whom wanted a quarter-point increase, according to the FOMC statement. Bitcoin retook $80,000 on Thursday on Waller’s remarks.
Two Sectors, Half The Jobs
The August gain came from a narrow base. Food services and drinking places added 59,000 positions against a 12,000 monthly average over the prior year, and local government education added 42,000, reversing a July decline. Those two lines account for 101,000 of the 162,000 total. Health care and social assistance added 13,000. Information shed 23,000.
Average hourly earnings rose 10 cents to $37.75, up 3.1% over 12 months. July CPI, the most recent reading, put headline inflation at 3.4%.
Nigel Green, chief executive of deVere Group, said in a statement issued Friday: “It’s a labour market being carried by a handful of sectors while wage growth quietly loses ground to inflation. This is, surely, imbalance dressed up as strength.”
Ryan Lee, Chief Analyst at Bitget Research, wrote: “Today’s print makes a September hike the base case instead of a risk, and we expect crypto to stay under pressure until the market has priced that fully. Bitcoin holding above $78,000 through next week would tell us the rate move is already discounted.”
Thirty Of 125
Thirty of the 125 largest non-stablecoin tokens are up on the day and 94 are down. Dogecoin dropped 5.1%, XRP 4.5% and Stellar 4.1%. Hyperliquid was flat at $85.03 and Chainlink fell 1.2%.
Leverage did not carry the move down, and has not come back for the bounce. The OKX BTC-USDT perpetual pays funding of -0.0016%, meaning shorts pay longs, with a premium of -0.00058 that puts the swap below index, on $2.20 billion of open interest.
DeFi total value locked stood at $88.1 billion, unchanged over 24 hours, DefiLlama data shows. Stablecoin supply was $304.2 billion, up 0.08% over seven days and 1.34% over 30 days, with Tether at $183.4 billion and Circle’s USDC at $73.9 billion.
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index read 74 on Friday against 65 on Thursday, according to Alternative.me. The reading is timestamped to midnight UTC, 12 and a half hours before the payroll release.

Jito’s 9.9% drop extends a 15.5% week, the second-worst seven-day showing among the 150 largest tokens behind Official Trump at 16.6%. Bitway, at $1.21 billion, is the largest token in the table. Jupiter fell 7.5% to $0.2198 against Solana’s 3.3% decline; the Solana aggregator holds $733 million of market value.
