Aave Labs Plans A Tokenized-Asset Credit Market On Avalanche With Tether’s USA₮
DeFi
Aave Labs said it plans to build a dedicated credit market for tokenized real-world assets on Avalanche, with USA₮, the dollar stablecoin Tether brands and Anchorage Digital Bank issues, as the first asset institutions could borrow against that collateral.
Tokenization has moved treasuries, money market funds and private credit onchain, and most of those assets sit where they were issued. A dedicated market would let holders borrow dollars against them without selling. It would also be one of the first specialized markets built on Aave V4’s hub-and-spoke design, the architecture Aave is using to add asset classes without pooling their risk into the main market.
Aave V4 on Avalanche holds $15.9 million in deposits net of borrowing and $6.8 million borrowed, DefiLlama data shows, out of $448 million across Aave V4 on all chains. Aave holds $280.5 million on Avalanche across every version of the protocol, and $17.7 billion across all chains and versions against $12.4 billion borrowed, the largest lending market in DeFi and roughly 1.8 times the size of second-place Morpho.
Stani Kulechov, founder and chief executive of Aave Labs, said in the release:
“Aave V4 was designed to enable new credit markets at internet scale. Avalanche combines a mature Aave lending market with a rapidly growing ecosystem for tokenized assets. The upcoming Aave V4 RWA Hub on Avalanche moves tokenized assets beyond issuance and into credit markets, putting them to work as collateral.”
Credit Lines, Not Pools
Aave V4 splits the protocol into a liquidity hub and the spokes that users touch. The hub “maintains oversight of Spokes, granting each a credit line for borrowing and a debit line for supplying,” per Aave’s documentation. Each spoke keeps its own risk parameters, oracles, emergency stops and accounting, and draws on the hub’s balance sheet rather than its own. An RWA hub would isolate tokenized collateral from the core pool while keeping access to that liquidity. Aave shipped the architecture on Ethereum on March 30 and built the isolation model in two layers during the capped launch.
The Avalanche deployment today runs one core hub and three spokes — Main, Forex and AVAX Correlated — listing WAVAX, BTC.b, USDC, USDt, WETH.e, EURC and sAVAX, according to the Aave address book. USDt there is Tether’s long-running dollar token on Avalanche, a separate asset from USA₮. Aave V4 went live on Avalanche on July 15, its first deployment outside Ethereum.
The DAO Votes Next
Aave Labs builds Aave under a service-provider scope for the Aave DAO, and the DAO approves new markets and asset listings. The ARFC that authorized Aave V4 on Avalanche in June set out the sequence: an RWA hub “is expected to be introduced through a follow-up proposal, with its own topology, asset scope, oracle configuration, and risk parameters, so that institutional collateral can be isolated from the core liquidity pool.” That proposal has not been posted yet, and neither has one to onboard USA₮.
The Avalanche deployment itself ran the full path. A TEMP CHECK posted May 27 passed on Snapshot in early June with 314,112 votes for and none against, the ARFC passed 414,632 to zero in a vote that closed July 10, and AIP 504 followed the same day. Aave Labs is running a second institutional-collateral track in parallel: an ARFC for custodied collateral lending posted Sept. 14, with Anchorage as custodian and Chainlink for custody attestation, covering one isolated hub and spoke on Ethereum. It is at the pre-vote stage.
USA₮ On Two Chains
USA₮ runs on Ethereum and Celo, with 184.3 million tokens circulating, CoinGecko data shows. An Avalanche deployment would be its third chain. Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A., a national trust bank chartered and supervised by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, issues the token; Tether Operations brands and distributes it and, per the usat.io FAQ, “is not the issuer.” Tether launched USA₮ on Jan. 27 and invested $100 million in Anchorage in February. The issuer’s last reserve report put 175,245,527 tokens outstanding against $175.9 million in reserves as of July 31.
Bo Hines, chief executive of Tether USA₮, said in the release:
“USA₮ was built to give institutions a trusted digital dollar they can use with confidence across the financial markets of tomorrow. Bringing USA₮ to Aave V4 on Avalanche expands how institutions can access dollar liquidity onchain. As real-world assets continue to move onchain, we see USA₮ becoming the preferred digital dollar for institutions borrowing, settling, and transacting across those markets.”
Horizon Already Does This
Aave already runs an institutional market for borrowing against tokenized assets. Horizon launched in August 2025 as a licensed instance on Ethereum, taking Superstate and Centrifuge fund tokens as collateral against stablecoin borrowing, and reached nearly $540 million in deposits by November when it added a VanEck treasury fund. It holds $262.5 million net today with $137.8 million borrowed, DefiLlama shows. Horizon is a fork of V3 under a DAO revenue-sharing license; an Avalanche RWA hub would be native V4 under direct DAO governance.
Where The Collateral Sits
Tokenized real-world assets excluding stablecoins stand at $38.8 billion, up 51.9% this year from $25.6 billion on Jan. 1, rwa.xyz data shows. On Avalanche C-Chain the distributed figure is $1.7 billion, up 154% this year, against $11.4 billion in represented value. The release puts the market above $51 billion and Avalanche’s tokenized assets above $3.4 billion.
John Nahas, chief business officer at Ava Labs, said in the release:
“The next phase of tokenization is about putting assets to work, not just bringing them onchain. As more financial institutions adopt tokenized assets, they’ll need the infrastructure to borrow against them, access liquidity, and use them as effectively as they do in traditional markets. Aave V4 on Avalanche is an important step toward making that a reality and advancing the shift to a more efficient, onchain financial system.”
AAVE And AVAX Slide
AAVE traded at $122.55 late on Sept. 15, down 7.5% over 24 hours, with a market capitalization of $1.9 billion, CoinGecko data shows. AVAX traded at $7.28, down 6.2%, at a $3.2 billion market capitalization. Both moved with a broad market decline rather than on anything specific to either protocol, with total crypto market capitalization at $2.69 trillion.
