In a groundbreaking move, blockchain infrastructure giant Alchemy has unveiled a new system enabling autonomous AI agents to manage their own transactions and access blockchain data services on Base, using onchain wallets and USDC.
The launch marks a significant step toward the agentic economy, where AI-driven entities can operate independently, executing complex financial tasks without human intervention. According to Alchemy, this system will allow AI agents to query blockchain networks, verify NFT ownership, check wallet balances, and access real-time token price data, with more features planned for the future.
Streamlining AI Operations
One of the key innovations is the ability for AI agents to automatically replenish their compute credits. If an agent’s balance runs low, Alchemy triggers a payment request that can be settled in USDC on Base, ensuring continuous operation. This seamless process is made possible through Coinbase’s x402 payment standard, which converts an HTTP ‘402 Payment Required’ response into an automatic billing trigger.
Empowering Developers
Nikil Viswanathan, CEO of Alchemy, emphasized the system’s potential for developers building decentralized finance (DeFi) agents, portfolio management bots, and other onchain workflows. ‘Now AI agents can access the same robust infrastructure autonomously, without any human touch,’ he said. ‘This is a pivotal moment for the agentic economy.’
Several major crypto applications, including Robinhood Crypto, Uniswap, OpenSea, Aave, and 0x, already rely on Alchemy for their transaction needs. The new system extends this support to AI agents, opening up a new frontier in blockchain automation.
Broader Adoption and Innovation
The rise of AI agents in the crypto space is gaining momentum. According to a recent McKinsey survey, nearly a quarter of organizations are expanding their use of agent-based systems. Crypto companies are also accelerating adoption. For instance, AI platform AI.com, founded by Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek, plans to launch an autonomous AI agent for retail users capable of executing trades and handling digital tasks.
Coinbase has introduced ‘Agentic Wallets,’ a crypto wallet infrastructure designed to let AI agents autonomously manage digital assets, including executing onchain transactions like managing DeFi positions and paying for services. Meanwhile, Monad’s developer community announced the winners of its Moltiverse Hackathon, featuring innovative ‘agent + token’ projects such as a programmable venture capital agent, AI-driven multiplayer battle arenas, and an AI dating network.
Looking Forward
The integration of autonomous AI agents with blockchain infrastructure represents a significant leap forward in the decentralization of finance and digital services. As more developers and companies embrace this technology, the agentic economy is poised to become a major driver of innovation and efficiency in the crypto space. Alchemy’s new system is not just a technological advancement but a foundational step toward a future where AI agents play a central role in the digital economy.
