In a move to streamline compliance with the European Union’s stringent product regulations, The Hashgraph Group, a Swiss technology company, has launched TrackTrace, a groundbreaking platform designed to enhance supply-chain visibility and facilitate the creation of digital product passports.
The platform leverages the Hedera network to track goods and record critical product data, including emissions and sustainability metrics, ensuring companies can meet the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation (ESPR). This regulation, effective July 18, 2024, mandates the creation of Digital Product Passports (DPPs) to standardize the recording and sharing of product information across supply chains.
Enhancing Supply Chain Transparency and Compliance
TrackTrace is not just a compliance tool; it’s a comprehensive solution that builds verifiable audit trails for product-specific data, such as sustainability credentials, durability, and reparability. The platform integrates agentic artificial intelligence (AI) to automate workflows, making compliance reporting more efficient and accurate.
A key early application of the DPP requirements will be the EU’s battery passport, which will apply to electric-vehicle and industrial batteries above 2 kilowatt-hours starting February 18, 2027. The DPP will also extend to textiles, apparel, iron, steel, and other priority items by July 2027, marking a significant shift in how products are tracked and regulated.
Supporting the EU’s Green Agenda
The EU’s Green Deal aims to transform the bloc into a more resource-efficient economy, reducing emissions by at least 50% by 2030 and achieving net carbon neutrality by 2050. The DPP is a crucial component of this initiative, providing a standardized way to track and report on the environmental impact of products throughout their lifecycle.
“The European Green Deal strives to establish the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 and needs infrastructure it can trust to transform Europe into a modern, efficient, and sustainable economy,” said Stefan Deiss, co-founder and CEO at The Hashgraph Group. “With TrackTrace built on Hedera, we deliver that critical trust data infrastructure layer that enables companies to comply with DPP regulation, while strengthening global supply chain integrity and fostering the transition to a sustainable, transparent, and circular economy.”
Collaboration and Integration
The Hashgraph Group is working with PwC to implement digital product passport solutions for enterprise clients. TrackTrace is also integrated with the company’s existing decentralized identity solution, IDTrust, which provides verifiable credentials in a decentralized manner. This integration ensures that physical events are linked to digital records in a tamper-proof environment, anchoring the data on the Hedera network.
Competing Solutions and Market Impact
While TrackTrace is a robust solution, it competes with other supply chain traceability platforms such as IBM Sterling Transparent Supply, TraceX, Circular, and TrusTrace. However, The Hashgraph Group’s use of the Hedera network, which claims to be the world’s most energy-efficient distributed ledger technology (DLT), sets it apart. The Hedera network is governed by a council of leading global organizations, including Dell, Deutsche Telekom, EDF, FedEx, Google, Hitachi, IBM, Mondelēz, and Standard Bank.
Looking Ahead
As businesses targeting EU markets prepare for the DPP requirements, solutions like TrackTrace will be essential. The platform not only helps companies meet regulatory standards but also positions them to lead in the global shift towards sustainable and transparent supply chains. With the EU’s ambitious climate targets and the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products, the adoption of such technologies is not just a compliance issue but a strategic imperative for future success.
