Tether, the leading stablecoin issuer, has reported a $1.5 billion operating profit for the second quarter of 2026, showcasing resilience in a challenging market. The company’s market capitalization of USDT grew to $184.6 billion, maintaining a 60% share of the stablecoin market despite a general slowdown in the broader cryptocurrency sector.
According to the Q2 attestation signed by BDO Advisory Services, Tether’s financials reveal a strategic diversification in its collateral portfolio. While the majority of USDT’s backing comes from U.S. Treasury bills, totaling $115 billion, the company has also expanded its gold holdings to $18.83 billion, adding 14 tons of physical gold during the quarter. Additionally, Tether’s bitcoin holdings surged to 98,932 BTC, valued at approximately $5.8 billion as of June 30, 2026.
Market Resilience and User Growth
Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino, highlighted the company’s ability to navigate market pressures while maintaining profitability and operational stability. “Q2 demonstrated the strength of Tether’s reserve strategy under real market pressure,” Ardoino said. “The assets that back some of our reserves were tested directly, and we remained resilient.” The company also reported a significant user base expansion, adding over 30 million users, underscoring the global appeal of USDT.
Excess Reserves and Transparency Initiatives
Tether’s assets exceed its liabilities by $4.11 billion, a testament to its robust financial health. This excess reserve provides a buffer against market volatility and enhances user confidence. To further bolster transparency, Tether has hired KPMG, one of the Big Four accounting firms, to conduct its first full independent financial audit. This move is part of Tether’s broader strategy to build trust and maintain its position as a leader in the stablecoin market.
Looking Forward
Tether’s Q2 results reflect a company that is not only financially strong but also committed to transparency and user growth. As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, Tether’s diversified collateral strategy and robust reserves position it well to weather future market cycles. The company’s decision to engage KPMG for an independent audit is a significant step towards building greater trust with its users and regulators alike.
