The world’s largest US dollar-pegged stablecoin, Tether (USDT), is on track for its steepest monthly supply decline in three years, signaling a potential contraction in crypto market liquidity. According to data from Artemis Analytics, the circulating supply of USDT has decreased by about $1.5 billion in February, following a $1.2 billion drop in January.
A Wake-Up Call for the Crypto Market
The significant decline in USDT’s supply may reflect a broader trend of investors pulling back from the crypto market. This trend was last seen in the aftermath of the FTX collapse in November 2022, which sent shockwaves through the industry. Tether’s USDT, with a market capitalization of $183 billion, represents about 71% of the total stablecoin market, according to CoinMarketCap.
Stablecoin Market Remains Resilient
Despite the drop in USDT’s supply, the total market capitalization of stablecoins has remained relatively stable, rising 2.33% in February to $307 billion, according to DeFiLlama data. While USDT and Circle’s USDC (USDC) saw declines of 1.7% and 0.9%, respectively, the World Liberty Financial’s USD1 (USD1) stablecoin recorded a 50% increase in market capitalization over the past month, reaching $5.1 billion.
Whales Offloading, New Entrants Stepping In
Big cryptocurrency investors, or ‘whales,’ have been reducing their USDT holdings. According to Nansen, whale wallets sold $69.9 million worth of USDT across 22 wallets over the past week, a 1.6-fold increase in the selling rate. However, new wallets created in the past 15 days have purchased about $591 million worth of USDT over the same period, indicating a mix of old money exiting and new participants entering the market.
Looking Forward
The current trend in USDT’s supply decline could be a harbinger of a more cautious approach to crypto investments, particularly as regulatory scrutiny increases. However, the resilience of the broader stablecoin market suggests that there remains a strong demand for stable and reliable crypto assets. As the market continues to evolve, the balance between established players and new entrants will be a key factor to watch.
