According to Coinbase’s Chief Policy Officer, Faryar Shirzad, the Clarity Act is poised to pass, driven by a generational shift in understanding and support among younger Democrats.
Speaking on The Hill’s morning Rising show, Shirzad highlighted that crypto regulation is ‘maybe the most bipartisan issue in Washington.’ Despite some resistance, he believes the bill will ultimately succeed due to the growing number of younger lawmakers who grasp the transformative potential of digital assets.
Generational Divide in Crypto Understanding
Shirzad emphasized that opposition to the Clarity Act is often generational, with older Democrats being more skeptical. ‘A lot of the opposition is generational — so it is Democrats who oppose it — but I think younger members who understand the technology, understand that money is transforming how we should engage financially, how we need to adapt, and so it’s really a generational shift,’ he said.
With around 67 million Americans owning crypto, Shirzad argued that the regulatory landscape must evolve to accommodate this growing user base. ‘We’ve got ethics nailed down, we’ve got nominations nailed down, we’ve got a bipartisan bill on the substance, we should be good to go,’ he added.
Addressing Concerns and Moving Forward
The Clarity Act aims to establish clear regulations for digital assets, including a ban on officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto. This provision has been a point of contention, but Shirzad believes it is necessary to ensure transparency and ethical standards.
However, some Democrats remain critical of the bill’s current form. A group of Democrats recently stated that the bill falls short of their expectations, particularly regarding stablecoin yield and ethics concerns. Banking lobbyists have also raised concerns, arguing that attractive crypto yields could erode the traditional banking system’s deposit base.
Looking Ahead
Despite these challenges, Shirzad remains optimistic. ‘The bill is an extraordinarily bipartisan piece of work,’ he said. If approved, the Clarity Act would set a robust regulatory framework for the world’s largest economy, potentially paving the way for broader crypto adoption and innovation.
The generational divide in understanding and support for crypto regulation is clear, but as younger lawmakers continue to push for modernization, the future of digital asset regulation looks increasingly promising.
